The “Blue” On Our US Flag Speaks Volumes
The American flag uses “Old Glory Blue”, and it’s very symbolic and distantly different from the “Bonnie Blue” Confederate flag. Give me Union Blue or death.
Do you know about the shade of blue in the American flag? When I began Diane’s Blue Notes in August 2023, I did some research on “Old Glory Blue.” Union Blue. Look at the list virtues symbolized and you’ll see why 💙🇺🇸💙 is my color 2024.

“The blue on the American flag has deeper meaning beyond just being a visible dye color. Here are some of the symbolic associations with the blue field:
Vigilance and justice – One of the commonly cited meanings is that blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
Unity – The single blue field unifies the whole flag, just as the states are unified under one nation.
Liberty – Going back to the revolution, the blue stood for liberty and freedom.
Sovereignty – The blue field overlooks the red stripes, asserting the federal government’s authority over the states.
So blue is not just a decorative color – it represents core American values and the establishment of the republic.
I include the “old Confederate South” information for contrast, reluctantly.
What about the Confederate flag blue? I’m not posting a photo of a flag that I now associate with maga-insurrectionists.. Sorry. It is not the Old Glory blue. You will find the following article from Wikipedia fascinating in light of all of the controversy over removing Confederate flags. It’s more than color or racism.
Look at the states and countries associated with it under history and popular culture: Florida. Texas, Louisiana. Mississippi lead the list. Think about that. The countries will amaze you.

I found it interesting that “Bonnie Blue Flag is also linked to the mythic (and historically false) “Gone With The Wind.”
I hesitate to share this video (there are many to choose from, sadly) because it has captioned lyrics which clearly depict the myth of the Confederacy/Southern states’ rights bought by many extremists in 2024. It’s terrible that the myth of southern rights supremacy and racism lives.
So much for presenting both sides? I wish students today understood the real Confederacy history and how it’s infected like a cancer the current right-wind white nationalists and Republican magas. The latter do not belong to the Republican Party of Lincoln no matter how many flags they use for photo ops.
Awesome Diane
Excellent post Diane - growing up in the south, I was told the bullshit about slavery. I was told why the city & county where I was raised was all white. I heard The South Shall Rise Again. I was TOLD a lot of bullshit about life with only whites was the way it SHOULD be. But the stubborn streak I inherited from Motherz family and none of the bullshit made sense to me.
I was thrilled when I went to Girl Scout Camp and there was a troop from the next county over. I couldn’t wait to meet them. They were not stupid 1/3 human. They were just exactly like the 11 & 12 year old white girls after camp. I never again heard the lies without calling them out. People are People PERIOD!
Now the family I have would make many of my ancestors want to disown us all. My hubby is Japanese, one DIL is Black the other is Polish and they both are from the North. 😮
It is not something any of us sought we just fell in love with the People who were right for us. FULL STOP it did not cause the end of the world- it caused us all to be HAPPY.
