Through Emily’s Eyes
We set our goals for success so high that we often fall into needless depression. Step back into a saner world with Emily Dickinson and ponder your daily successes. Think small. It will be big enough.
If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
- Emily Dickinson
I was in extreme grief after the loss a dear friend, and another good friend advised me wisely. It wasn’t radical, but it’s the best advice I’ve ever had in the lows of life. Now our nation is in a terrible funk, a low so low that it’s affecting our self-confidence. We can get through it.
So, here’s the advice that has kept me balanced for the last 25 years. He simply said, “The only remedy for your grief is helping others feel better. Cry alone but lift up your friends who need your wisdom.”
Simple. It worked and is still working though it’s tiring to feel the pain of others during this stressful political upheaval. Hug your friends and family often. Your political friends need boosted for staying energized. You are the doctor of their souls right now. Let them share their anxieties, and you will know how to listen better. Just listen. Hug.
