Art, Music, Literature, and History Keep Us Sane and Humane
The humanities save human beings from narrow, bigoted, insulated outlooks. Travel combined with humanities allows people to step into the shoes of other nationalities. Reading widely does likewise.
Teach your children well. Instead of steering them toward the highest paying occupations, steer them to lives of service and love for art, music, literature and history of the world’s woes and triumphs. Teach to learn truths through reading and talking to wise adults.
Steer them toward loving other nationalities, ethnic backgrounds as well as those who are different than themselves. If you do that well, you have added kind, service-minded and compassionate people to guard against narcissistic leaders. That’ll build a community of young intellectual, compassionate freedom fighters who don’t seek arms to make a point.
Allow your children to play with art and music more than on computers and cell phones. Take them to a variety of museums and concerts even if it’s online with your guidance. Most importantly feed them quality reading material and read to them from the cradle up. Foster sharing favorite books, art, and music.
Home schooling removes the interaction with experts in English, history, art and music. Science and math take precedence in order to get scholarships whether they are educated at home, or in public or private schools.
Parents must not cram their children’s schedules with performance or athletics which are so time-consuming that there is no time to enjoy nature, look up at the stars, or draw. Humanities encourage interaction with great authors, geniuses, artists and musicians. Sports encourage sports. The body and mind must be balanced by heart and soul studies.
I believe it was Cokie Roberts who said “Raise children who you actually like.” Your advice above will lead to that happy result. 🙏❤️
