The humanities save human beings from narrow, bigoted, insulated outlooks. Travel combined with humanities allows people to step into the shoes of other nationalities. Reading widely does likewise.
Absolutely love this. We need to live this too. “Steer them toward loving other nationalities, ethnic backgrounds as well as those who are different than themselves.”
Yes, that’s what worries me most about home schooling. Children often do not have anyone but their family and their friends—all the same in race, religion, etc. If they go to college or travel, it’s culture shock and it’s ripe for stereotyping.
On the other hand schools are about conforming and fitting into a set narrative. Home schoolers have regular gatherings with other home schoolers. I think we feel safer with what we know but we learn when we surround ourselves with culture music and books from all walks if life and different cultures.
Love your passion for the humanities. Sports teach more than just...sports. Sports teach teamwork, acceptance of others, discipline, respect for others and can complement the humanities by instilling work ethic and relationship skills. Healthy mind healthy body.
I agree that sports can complement the humanities when coaches are interested in the person, not the score. Like teachers, there are good and bad ones. I team taught humanities and we did have an athletic component because 2 of the teachers were married to coaches. It takes a village to use a cliche to make a whole individual a well-rounded student. Thanks for mentioning sports!
Art, music, ideas, downtime!
Yes—it’s what I like about being indoors wintertime❤️

I believe it was Cokie Roberts who said “Raise children who you actually like.” Your advice above will lead to that happy result. 🙏❤️
Thanks, Lisa! I love your thinking!
