My folks met in an Italian hospital during WWII. He the wounded soldier. She the nurse. He the lieutenant. She the captain. He gratefully acknowledged being outranked for life.
She saved him, married him, had me and then my sister. They rarely spoke of the war. He had fought Rommel in North Afica and was at Anzio.
But once when asked what the hardest part of serving was, he responded: "Sending that kid from Brooklyn ahead and seeing him die."
I think it was all so awful, they needed to compartmentalize it. I can imagine what Mom saw and dealt with in the hospital. It changes people.
And to think Mussolini has been reincarnated as a NYC con man real estate casino bankrupter.
Diane, Thank you for sharing the your photos of your father and your parents story. Happy Memorial Day to you and your family. My dad also served in WWII, and my uncles on both sides.
Thanks, Pamela— I think that probably gives us something in common and a will to fight the current fascist movement . Today ppl I think of all the wonderful soldier, sailors airmen, and infantry men versus today’s fascist groups trying to destroy what others fought for. It’s treasonous.
My father too was killed by WWII…the PTSD coupled with bipolar disorder in the decorated hero eventually became too much as nightmares became daytime reality. He was a truly wonderful man in so many ways…
I’m sorry to hear that, Patrick. Apparently, my father did very well after the war hiding any concerns that he had because he was a newlywed. Because there were many jobs open for returning vets, he got a great job supporting us. My parents did not long to be rich. They just wanted to make a family and live peacefully. All went well until I was 8, and he was laid off from his job. Depression set in I suppose, and he committed suicide not because of the war. It left my mother Mother devastated. That’s another story.
I should look at the letters I have from my parents to each other… I fear we may loose the republic. I want his story and the story of our family’s military history to speak.
I am so saddened that Americas goodness has been sullied by a complicit Republican Party and the criminal in the Whitehouse.
My recollection of reading them was how articulate my father was with a high school diploma from the public school in Jersey City, NJ. He wrote to my mother that she should look at the moon and think of him. And that his love for her and my sister was boundless and his love for my
Mother and my sister and his optimism about the future.
I am in the midst of reorganizing my life and I may scan the letters and send copies to the all of the decedents who are directly in the bloodline or who are mentioned.

What a story, Bill, of a true patriotic duo💙🇺🇸💙 Those days may never come again I fear at least before I leave earth.
You've created a loving tribute to your dad. My dad served in the Army during WWII, and my husband served in the Navy for 20 years.
Thanks, Liz. I think we have a different perspective of where we are now. May we see and end to this administration’s evil acts.
That end can't come soon enough for me. The number of people suffering for no good reason is gut-wrenching.
Yes, and we know more will be hurt. Despicable.

We will prevail, Diane.
Thank you for sharing your precious pictures, Diane.
Thanks, Katharine💕🇺🇸💙🇺🇸

America beacon of hope is flickering.

Sweet memories!
I believe that the library of congress was collecting letters… I am sure they will be used to start the fire when the books are burned.
I hope not!
Yes, you should. I have put it off like most of us.
Truth is not subjective
Yes, I fear the current generation will have a skewed historical record as well. It’s a rough time for the Truth.
