The good and bad about tagging people in titles. It depends on your intent: to applaud the person or gain subscribers. I think the first category is the way of serious writers.
HCR is one of the most important public figures in any form of media. She is a fact based historian. She calls out lies and therefore will be a target.
There are trolls everywhere. There is one in particular on HCR's Letter than haunts the comments section with taunting falsehoods. I once made the mistake of engaging. Never again. All I did was give him the fight he wanted and waste my time. Now I just hit those three little dots and "collapse" his comments. And ignore.
Hi Diane! I blocked that writer a while back. I don’t remember what topic his piece covered. I just remember that it attacked someone or something in an aggressive manner, and I didn’t want to see any more of his stuff.
I consider HCR to be an historian and appreciate the clarity and calm she projects.
Agree with you, Diane. And I, for one, am tired of what I call “over emoting.” I count of HCR for her steady, reasoned take on events and am grateful that she doesn’t attempt to tell me how to respond or what to feel. She assumes my empathy and compassion are intact. Of course she is not above saying how she feels but it is always shared in a measured, caring way. She doesn’t need to make her point by pouring emotional gasoline on an already raging pain. Which brings me to another point many are making here - the use of emotions to confuse, browbeat, and yes abuse readers. Part of the MAGA plan is to exhaust us to the point that we stop caring out of self-preservation. Don’t let them! P.S. Happy happy birthday Winnie. You’re adorable.
Pilgrims [sic] Response is way out of line. (I didn't read the whole thing. An ad hominem attack does nothing to address the problems that led to loss of life in Texas.) When historians are attacked for doing their job (with citation of sources!), you know we're in trouble. One of the reasons this country is in such a mess is that it is being run on emotion, not reason. Ugh.
Diane: Some idiot getting righteous on Professor Heather Cox Richardson?
Professor HCR does wonderful work and privileges us with the skills of her discipline.
Professor HCR pointed out the losses in the National Weather Service, and set out President Trump's evasive responses.
Thanks for linking to the critique -- which I read bemusedly.
With you, I think Joe Doe is milking Professor HCR for readership and using Joe-Rogun style faux-outrage as clickbait.
With you, I certainly criticize the opportunism and would not want to increase his readership.
You and I each do outreach based upon research, affording credit to the sources, treating each person with dignity, and promoting core values of a society of ordered liberty and due process of law, respecting the dignity of each person under the law.
You and I are friends, and you have a good, warm heart and advocate true core values.
Diane: These media platforms enable correspondence between such friends as you and me.
But in the complex world of human interactions, less than good individuals also use the same media.
And the media set click-bait.
So, "That Substack is now shown as one of the people to follow."
The 'Stack is imperfect. Highly imperfect.
There are worse columnists than him on the 'Stack, believe me!
Much worse.
But the 'Stack includes Professor Heather Cox Richardson, Professor Joyce Vance, and Professor Ruth Ben-Ghiat.
And . . . Diane!
So, we form friendships and follow the good sources, enabled by the platform, and we avoid poor writers, who, unfortunately, are hosted by the same platform.
It is as if the same offset printer put both the New York Times and The National Enquirer to press and distribution!! LOL!
We read, support and follow the good and reliable persons THROUGH the Media, not BECAUSE of the Media.
Of course I agree with you. Another practice that I find in bad form is putting your own publication in the comments. This happens in Jeff Tiedrich's articles all the time. And others. Stand on your own merits!
I think when X and Facebook subscribers came to Substack and Blue Sky in droves, they have brought in some Republican trollers. It needs to be addressed head on. Bluesky tries harder than Substack, but it’s not about good writers. A lot of it is about emoting.

I feel your anger. Don't let it getcha :)
Thanks, Bill. I actually emailed her a copy. She’s used to that kind of stuff, but Substack needs some rules and feedback.

Happy birthday, Winnie! You are adorable! 🐶
I need a new service doggie. Such cute babies I would be happy to take them
I don’t think doodle breeds work as well as labs for service. My Bernedoodle is too unpredictable and unfocused.

You are so right, Jena. Between now and 2026, the red sharks and snakes will be trying to defame all who criticize Donnie.

Pilgrims Response seems to be MAGA dedicated to trolling HCR while trying to convince us of legitimate arguments against her.
His reading list is “interesting.”
I agree with you, Sandra.

Not least -- Winnie is huggable.
Winnie: ENJOY YOUR ICECREAM!
That Substack is now shown as one of the people to follow. Grrr.

Heather Cox Richardson is a national treasure and a clear and reasoned voice among much self serving noise from which we are innundated daily/hourly.
My sentiments exactly!
